River House is a 3 bedroom, one and a half bath, waterfront house on a quarter acre, along the East Branch of the Ausable River in Upper Jay, near Whiteface Mountain skiing and high peaks hiking. River House features an outdoor camp fire pit, and decks facing the river, on both levels. River Haven is a 2 story, one bedroom house, sort of like a cool bachelor pad, attached to the South end of River House, which can optionally add additional sleeping and living quarters to guests of River House. River House and River Haven have separate entrances. Upper Jay is an artsy, rustic Adirondack community, framing the Ausable river valley with its swimming holes and beautiful mountain views, nestled between Ebeneezer and the stunning Jay Range. River House lies directly on the river, within walking distance of a coffee-house style music and theater center called the Recovery Lounge and the Upper Jay Art Center to the north, and Paul's Bakery, a popular local hang out, to the south. Various arts and craft shops make Upper Jay and Jay interesting cultural centers. Jay features Summer concerts on the Village Green. River House is a great vacation destination for fisherman, hikers, birders, star gazers and nature lovers generally. In Winter, bring your cross country skis, snowshoes, and of course your downhill ski gear, for your adventures on Whiteface Mountain, the home of the 1980 Winter Olympics downhill events. The 50 acre Adirondack Wildlife Refuge and Rehabilitation Center is five miles northeast of River House, where your family may meet our educational wolves, Cree and Zeebie, and learn about birds of prey, and the role they play in nature. Non-releasable great-horned owls, peregrine falcons, red-tailed hawks, rough-legged hawks, barred owls, screech owls, broad-winged hawks and ravens, live in spacious enclosures on a ridge above Lake Everest. These are raptors who are healthy, but whose release is prevented by individual disabilities which hinder their ability to hunt and compete in the wild. Food and daily exercise are provided for them, and they, along with the wolves, serve as subjects in educational demonstrations and talks. Guests of River House are welcome to use the canoes and kayaks at the Refuge on Lake Everest, or to hike/ ski/ snowshoe the child-friendly, one mile hiking trail through the refuge. |
