| The rolling "Scenic Trail"
loop along the west side of Lower Ausable Lake, and up and over the
many "teeth" of Sawteeth, features some of the best views from any
Adirondacks high peak. On the Lake side, you see Indian Head,
Colvin and Blake along the Lake, and Giant, Noonmark, BearDen, Dial and
Nippletop to their rear. At the summit, looking west, you get "in your
face" views of Basin, Saddleback and Gothics, with Skylight, Haystack,
Marcy and Armstrong as their backdrop. I chose a hazy day in a rainy
July for my hike, so the only drawback was less than clear photographs.
From Otter Chalet and Deep Woods Cabin, take Springfield Rd. south to
Jay, 9N south into Keene, and 73 southeast through Keene Valley and St.
Huberts. Hiker parking is off the second intersection marked "Ausable
Club" as you're driving south on 73 towards the Northway. You have to
walk about 1/2 mile from your car to the Lake Road sign-in point. |
