Roscoe & Jonathan at Placid
Landing, Conquering heroes at the summit, Lake Placid from the summit

| Whiteface can be approached
via the Whiteface Landing Trail from Route 86 at Connery Pond just west
of the River Road intersection on the way to Lake Placid from Wilmington.
Joshua's older brother Jonathan had never hiked up one of the High
Peaks, and joined me on a beautifully clear, sunny day, that began
hazing over as we reached the summit after 6.2 miles and 4 hours.
Three miles of easy, fairly level hiking brings you to Placid Landing,
with it's sweeping and picturesque view of the northeast corner of Lake
Placid, i.e., the lake, not the village. A mile north, past the leanto,
the elevation begins in earnest, increasing in intensity as you
get further up the mountain. At about 3,800 feet, just when you're
tired of hiking under canopy, you begin to break into daylight on a
series of bare rock slides, and at a 1/3 mile from the summit, the
trees thin and stub out leaving you with wonderful views all around.
This hike is longer than either of the ascents from the Wilmington
side, but less strenuous overall. |
