Momma Gator with last Summer's Brood in Shark Valley 2002
I've been down the Turner River twice in a 17 foot Grumman canoe, once solo in November '94, and the following May with a friend. With the Turner River too low to float a canoe in the 2002 drought, Alex and I canoed down Half Creek in the western Everglades in March, and visited Shark Valley, and the Southeastern Everglades as well. Even in its current state, the Everglades remains one of the key places to visit for wildlife viewing. Alternative parks worth visiting are the Sabine National wildlife refuge in Lousiana, and the Aransas Nat'l Wildlife refuge on the Texas gulf coast. As a New Yorker accustomed to wary turkey vultures, I got a kick out of the Everglade's black vultures, which not only did not fly away when approached in '94, but walked out of the way, and gave me a bad look!
