Pleasant Hike for Families from the Ausable Club, Great Views

| Indian Head is one of those delightful little mountains, offering great views for modest effort. We last hiked Indian Head in 1982, when Dan and Matt were little guys, and Emily was a baby. When we returned with Emily in 2003, Dan had become a father, and Matt had just announced his marriage plans. Time flies, but Indian Head with its views of Lower Ausable Lake and the high peaks, still offers a satisfying hike for kids and grandparents of all ages. The trail starts from the Ausable Club, so drive south on Route 73 through Keene Valley, and park in the lot at the second "Ausable Club" right hand turn in St. Huberts. From there, walk up the hill past the golf course, make a left between the tennis courts, and walk down to the AMR gate, where the dirt road connecting Ausable Club to Lower Ausable Lake begins. There are three approaches to Indian Head. We took the Gill Brook Trail from the dirt road, to take in the waterfalls along the way, and then the trail to the summit which included Fish Hawk Cliffs, a total of about six miles round trip. |
