Noon Mark has some of the best all around views in the High Peaks Region, and can be accessed from the Dix Trail (about 6.6 miles round trip) off route 73 south of Keene Valley, and from the Ausable Club (slightly shorter hike). At 3,556 feet, Noon Mark is not one of the 46 Adirondack High Peaks over 4,000 ft. However, some strenuous scrambling over rock during the last mile prevents us from including it among the family hikes, at least where it involves young kids. At 4,857 feet, Dix is the sixth highest of the High Peaks, and can be accessed via the Dix Trail (about 13.2 miles), or from Elk Lake. Steve & Dan took the former in late Aug. '01, and the Gods responded with cloudiness, deteriorating into a driving rain, obscuring all views from the summit. It happens.
