Guests
at Otter Chalet are welcome to use the Kayaks & Canoes on Lake
Everest at the Wildlife Refuge & Rehab Center, a short walk away

|
At Otter Chalet, the kids can safely camp outside, and draw their sleeping bags up to a roaring campfire, or camp inside in the dorm room, where they can play the Chalet's air hockey and foos-ball games, or watch Satellite TV. Log Cabin Wet Sauna, hot tub, satellite TV, DVD, VCR, stereo, high-speed wireless internet, microwave, barbecue, dishwasher, washer and dryer, and linens will help make Otter Chalet a convenient and hassle free vacation. Folks who stay at Otter Chalet has its own canoe and kayak for use on the river and Lake Everest. Otter Chalet enjoys unimpeded views of Whiteface, Esther, Lookout and Marble Mountains, while the Refuge includes an official New York State DEC Fishing Preserve within its Northern boundary, a guided, wildlife refuge hiking trail suitable for kids and dogs, and a lovely Adirondack meadow, suitable for picnics or snow football, surrounded by towering white pines. Otter Chalet is less than three miles driving from Whiteface Mountain, and within 10 miles of Lake Placid, the Olympic village, and the Adirondack High Peaks Region. Canoe or kayak up and down the beautiful Ausable River, swim, fish for your dinner, or just sit back and observe as the local natural inhabitants play, browse, pursue and earn survival. We’ve seen Eagle, Hawk, Owl, Osprey, Loon, Heron, Merganser, Hummingbird, Pileated Woodpecker, Ermine, Bobcat, Fox, Coyote, Black Bear, Mink, Beaver, Porcupine, Deer, and Otter on Lodge property, but the only people you'll see are folks paddling by in canoes and kayaks. Canoe into shallow water sloughs and channels on both sides of the river, where your kids will delight in seeing beaver, otter, frogs, painted turtles and herons. The Refuge itself features rehabilitated educational animals, such as wolves, bobcat, fox, opossum, as well as hawks, falcons and owls. Even if you don't spot any of these creatures during your stay at Otter Chalet, you may walk over to the Wildlife Refuge enclosures, meet these animals up close, and learn all about them. Hike any of the hundreds of trails in the region, mountain-bike, snow-shoe, cross-country ski up and down the river in front of the houses, downhill ski at Whiteface (or ride the gondola up with your mountain bike in the Summer), take fly fishing lessons from Fran Betters and the guides at the Adirondack Sport Shop, or just drive around and take in the incomparable beauty of Autumn in New York's Adirondack Mountains. In the evening, relax around the campfire outside, take in the stars, listen to the Wilmington Riverside rock & country concerts every Thursday night within 2 miles of the Lodge, or go into Lake Placid for dining and entertainment. This is a place to get away from it all, to rebuild, regroup, and face your busy lives with a renewed perspective. For those of you who are new to the Adirondacks, prepare to discover what we learned long ago (and we’ve hiked in parks all over the US, Canada and Alaska). There is no lovelier place in the world to vacation than the Adirondack Mountains: the Adirondacks has it all. About Lake Everest: Formed by the damming of the West Branch of the Ausable River, at the bridge in Wilmington, Lake Everest extends from the dam up to Otter Chalet, and features a public beach in Wilmington, on Route 86, about a 1/4 mile west of the four corners in Wilmington. The Park on Lake Everest provides a great place for younger kids who want to play in and around the water on a sandy bottom. At Lake Everest you can launch canoes and kayaks, fish for the famous Ausable River brown and rainbow trout, play volleyball, or just picnic under the lovely cedars that cluster around the shore. Lake Everest has rest rooms, barbecue pits, and country/ rock/ folk concerts every Thursday Evening in July and August. |
