| Little Porter Mountain in Keene Valley is almost a perfect mountain for kids and beginners of all ages. It has beautiful views, the trail is easy to hike, without (for the most part) the usual boulders and exposed roots characteristic of Adirondack trails, the grades are gradual thanks to switchbacks, and the summit is only 1.8 miles from the parking lot in "the Garden" in Keene Valley. Best of all, if the hiker is encouraged by their success, they can hike an additional 2 miles to the Summit of Porter Mountain, and enjoy even better views of the surrounding High Peaks. The hike to Porter, as well, is gradual, with easy grades and mainly unobstructed trails, and can be continued on to Cascade. From Otter Chalet and Deep Woods Cabin, take Springfield Road south into Jay, turn right onto 9N heading into Keene, make left onto Route 73, make a right at the Ausable Inn in Keene Valley, and drive all the way back, following signs to the parking area for "the Garden". |
